Exclamation Your input needed!

In a recent post, the question was raised whether or not the moderators and folks who run this site should participate in the photo contests. We've never heard any concerns from any other members but maybe others feel the same way as the original poster that the mods shouldn't participate?

Is it okay if the moderators participate in the photo contests? Do you perceive any conflict of interest if they do? Your thoughts on this subject would be very much appreciated.

I run a photo "challenge" group on a major photo sharing website, in which a topic is chosen, 10 photos are submitted and voting begins on the favorite. There is no physical prize, but the winning photo (being the first one to recieve 5 votes) is admitted to the group pool and the winner may then select the next topic if they choose to. I participate in many of the challenges as do my moderators. No one complains about us participating. The only complaint I ever hear is regarding the person who has the most photos in the pool, and the fact that the voting is fixed. (With over 400 members--that's a little hard to do) Someone will always complain about the winner....

I certainly see no problem with ANY member participating. If the perception is that the same people usually win (I think that's the way it was said) then the answer is for more people to participate. I, myself, have not participated as much as I used to, but that is a time/work/life issue that hopefully is going to change real soon!

No problem with it. Let um whine. I've been in 5 contest and out of the five I've gotten ONE vote ( not my own) and you don't hear me complaining. You can't win if you don't play. And to the winners

The moderators are no different than the rest of us other than the fact that they keep the site running. In the few contests I have entered (so far) I have not "won". It does not bother me in the least. I participate just for the fun of it and to be around other like minded photographers. Some other sites are huge and to me impersonal. This site is growing which is good but it is going in the right direction IMO.

I see it as that the contests should be open to all. If the same people keep wining, that should make more people want to enter to try to knock them off the top. I try to enter as many as I can, for the simple reason that I enjoy photography and the contest give me something to think about, and work towards. And have never won, came in second or third a few times. but that makes me want to try harder, not to get mad at those who have beaten me. There will always be someone who is better, fast, stronger, prettier, whatever, blah blah blah... It is the way that the world works. And to say that some people are "too good" to enter is a bit childish. They are good photographer's now, but I am pretty sure that they got that way to do years of practice and work. And a photographic mind set. Which is proven by on there spare time looking after a site to let other photographers, show their work and learn form other. I, myself have state my great gratefulness to the amount that I have learned from this site. And will do so again here and now.
Thank You Photochimps

I wouldn't be half the photographer that I am now with the help of this wonderful community.

Due to lack of participation, let them participate.

They should be warned that if they continue to kick glutious, we will do something!!

Next time just vote for me and we can solve this problem.

The real solution is for more to participate.

I was the only "other" vote...I meant to vote an emphatic YES but just voted other because I wanted to leave a comment.

Anyway, the long and the short of it is that the admins and mods have, by entering the contests, helped me improve. After looking at their photos for awhile, you kind of figure out why they are winning/placing in the top 3 so frequently...make sense? Yes, enter the me how it's done!
