One of my "beginner" photos taken last summer near Cartersville, GA. While hiking around the river, I noticed this tree and the unique look. I had no filters at that time, nor a good lens. This was taken with a Canon Rebel XT and the "kit" lens.

You mention having no filters at the time. If you haven't already, you might want to try a UV/Haze filter. That would add a bit of 'pop' to this images such as this. Also, a circular polarizer will enhance the colors and reduce the reflections.
You may already have this gear, but just wanted to mention it in case you didn't.
