Note the dangling cables awaiting the decking on the new bridge.

That's the Olympic Mountains in the background.

Great shot, Russ. It's cool seeing the old and new bridges side by side. Seems like the new bridge is going up fast. Do they plan on removing the old one when the first one is completed? Kelowna is in the process of having a new bridge built to replace the old, far too 'small' bridge that crosses the lake. (It replaced the ferries back in 1958, I think) The current bridge is a real bottleneck which was really brought home to the provincial government back in 2003 when they had to evacuate 35,000 people from the city during the height of the Okanagan Mountain Park firestorm. Problem is, the newer bigger bridge will only encourage more traffic, sigh.

isn't the old bridge the one that was built when "galloping gertie" broke apart in a windstorm back in the 40's?

The "old" bridge is the 2nd, successor to the notorious and ill-fated Galloping Gertie. The new bridge will be the 3rd. Both will be used to support the burgeoning population residing on the peninsula, each will have one way traffic......and a toll.
