Eugene is another one of the many homeless people I've photographed in downtown Toronto. As many street people do to keep warm in the winter, he is sitting on a metal heat exhaust grating set into the sidewalk. The building behind him in the background is The Old City Hall.

Wonderful image, Robert. I'm so glad to see you posting your street shots here--they're always poignant and moving images. I like how you composed this and the DOF you used--conveys all too well how Eugene, and others like him, are alone and abandoned by society. The empty street, his posture and the solitary cup in front of him speaks volumes. On my monitor, his beard is lost in his jacket--any way to bring out the details a bit more in that area of the image? Toronto has been in the news quite a bit lately...sorry to hear about the troubles Toronto has been having of late.
Thank-you for sharing this with us. I wish there were some quick and satisfying solutions for the plight of Eugene and the other street people of Toronto and in the other communities across Canada and the US.

I was wondering, when you shoot the homeless, do you give them a 'little something' for their time? I have been thinking about documenting them here and I feel like I will need to give them a couple of bucks for the shots. Nothing posed but a donation when I'm done. Perhaps, just give them some food rather than cash to guarantee it's for their well being and not to support some 'bad habit'. Just thinking out loud.

Very powerful image! Nice work.
