Chris,
this is an interesting photo, with the eyes being the focal point of the image. While I think this is a different point of view, the fact that you have another shot taken from the same angle leads me to think that this was not the exception, but rather just the norm. And if that is the case, then I suggest that when you take photos of children, that you get down to their level as opposed to shooting from an adults point of view, which will give the shot a more intimate feel.
