I think you did OK!. I prefer this one to the other one solely due to the simplicity of the background. In the other one, the background is a bit distracting to me. Kind of like those poles and trees behind her are growing out of her head. Now that is being nitpicky about it, but I am learning that every last detail matters. I do, however, like how you tilted the camera a bit in the other shot. Above all, the big thing is that you got out there and did it. It is not easy. I am curious as to how you advertised/marketed yourself to get the work?

John-
Kat is an incredibly talented dancer at the studio where my daughter dances. She caught my eye 4 years ago but I didn't get into photography until 2 years ago. Since then I have photographed her during rehearsals and performances, (she appears in many of the dance photos in my gallery.) Her mother approached me a few weeks ago and asked if I would do some portraits for her since she is a senior this year. I agreed to try it and they were both well aware that I'd never done this before. I did not charge her for a session since anyone who knew what they were doing probably could have taken these in half the time it took me and achieved better results. Still I knew it would be a great opportunity for me to step out of my comfort zone and she'll get some nice prints out the deal at a very reasonable cost. Since her own likes are different from her mother's I will take Jim's suggestion and have some prints made for her. We're going to do at least 2 more sessions before we call it case closed.
When I photograph performances the girls are not really aware of when and how I'm shooting them and I don't have to pose them so it's a lot less work for me. I also know the theater conditions very well and I didn't have that advantage with this shoot.
