You captured the image at a wonderful time. Her gesture is indeed beautiful. What were your post processing procedures, just out of curiosity? Mostly because I'm thinking that it could be sharpened a tad more in your editing program.

Usually post on the dance images includes adjusting white balance (the stage lights usually introduce too much yellow), brightness (flash flattens the images and the gelled lights on the backdrop go grey so often I have to intoduce at least 1/3 stop in post), and sometimes sharpening. I shoot full manual with a shutter speed of 1/125 or 1/160-higher when I can. Even so, there's issue sometimes with not being able to stop the motion and that could be why it looks a little soft. I'll have to go back and take another look.

You've captured a beautiful and graceful pose. Love the complementary colors--her costume really pops against the orange background. If you're not averse to a little 'photoshopping' I'd suggest cloning out the two shadows of her arms, the scuff mark on the wall and bits of debris on the floor. The stage lighting sounds like it's a nightmare to manage. Do you set your white balance as the lighting changes or do you go with auto and make adjustments during post processing?

I leave the the white balance on auto and adjust in post. With the understanding that these are not meant to look like studio portraits, where the light is controlled, it's not too bad-some performances are worse than others. The hardest thing to manage is the appropriate ISO and shutter speed, because the light changes constantly during the performance and they are not going to stop and wait for me to figure out how to react. I love the fact that with the 40D, all the settings are displayed in the viewfinder, including the ISO. It's really a great camera for the setting...although I sometimes wonder what I could do with a full frame DSLR.
