Of the two, I prefer this one. I like the backlighting, comp and DOF. Lots of middle tones, but no true blacks. I tried adjusting the tones to extend the range of tones to all the zones, but thought it looked too contrasty/busy for this kind of image. Why monochrome? I haven't seen the original, but think color might be a better choice given the subject.

Why monochrome? Well I suppose because it has a mixture of light and dark areas. Actually I am not sure why monochrome images work...any links/resources would help!!
