I first saw this rare phenomenon two years ago on the day of Spokane's Art Fest. That one was an especially intense display that may have been one of the best ever, photographed. Since then I've been keeping an eye out for it during this time of year. The sun's angle has to be high enough and the ice crystals in the clouds have to line up a certain way. We didn't have much of the necessary high cloud formations today so I had to work fast.
