Hi Suzanne. Is that right - Exposure time - 30.000 s (I took it from your EXIF). You really made 30 seconds exposure? Or is it one 30th of a second? Did you use tripod?
My settings with the same (almost) camera and the same lens are - tripod, 5.6 fstop, 5-10 seconds. With 18 mm lens star trails are not that obtrusive, the number of stars are great (if the sky is clear and without smog), Wait till late fall - Orion constellation is beautiful! Val

Hi Val,
Yes, the exposure time is 30 seconds. That night I was experimenting with different exposure times. This one seemed to work the best then with the focal length at 18mm. And I did use a tripod with cable release. I worked with the image in PS later to crop it extensively and improve the exposure slightly. One thing I cannot understand here in the web site is the EXIF info showing the white balance recorded as cloudy. I had preset the white balance that night to sunny, 0. I double checked the camera info just now and it is wb sunny, 0. This has got me really puzzled.
I am looking forward to photographing Orion in the fall. Thanks for letting me know. We do tend to get a lot of valley fog at that time of year into late winter so I'll have to be very patient.
Suzanne
