Metal bats do flex & extend when making contact with the ball, but it happens within few microseconds. If you view high speed camera footage (like the kind used on Mythbusters) you can see the movement clearly, but its a rarity to catch one with a still camera

Nice shot! I think that what appears to be flexxing is actually the result of the shutter curtian slit moving down across the scene as the bat is moving forward across the scene from left to right.

Maybe that could be true, if I were shooting vertical. Thing is, this shot is cropped from a horizontal photo. I prefer to shoot horizontal for batting shots, since I get more room to get the ball & bat in the frame.
