sorry todd, not feeling this one. the comp. is too centered and the tree is too far away. tones are ok, but could use some more contrast.
i'd like to see you moved in closer to the tree (or find another if this one is on private property and you can't move in), maybe keep it in the center or not just depending on how much of the frame you fill with the tree and what else is in the shot.

I agree, the tree is too far away. I like the sky, but the tree is way too small to be of interest.

I kinda like it. The distance and size of the tree conveys lonelyness, though to me the image is more about insignificance.
The relationships between the clouds and the tree can be interpreted as the masses that are sometimes perceived as being "better" or "above", those with insecurities.
Another view might be that while the tree is focal point of the photo, or the center of attention, it is still alone. Again, like some people who feel all alone, even when focus is only on them.
And then there is the third take, sometimes a picture of a solitary tree, is just a picture of a solitary tree. No, I'm not a psycholgist, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express.
BTW Todd, I like the shot, it makes me think. You could have posted this in your Secret Chip trivia and no one would guess it was yours. Nice change of style.

I like it too. The low horizon keeps it from being too centered, imo. I might try to burn the field in a little and dodge the middle clouds a tad.

Hi Todd,
I like images like this very much, too, so I'm glad to see your work here. Your choice of B & W is very effective for this scene and mood.
Another way of viewing this tree might be as a vertical, with just cropping a lot of the right and left sides right out.
This way it could be read from the foreground right up through to the sky. Probably if I had seen this tree I would have included even more sky. I love the way we all see things differently.

I love the great sky here - it has so much mood. The tree is too centered for my taste so maybe a crop would be beneficial. Ditto Beth on a slight boost in contrast.

Awesome sky. Your composition and title match perfectly--the comp definately conveys loneliness. Ditto Tom's and Beth's comment about the contrast: there's no true white or black--a tinytweak of the black and white sliders in Levels would do the trick.

I really like this shot, Todd! It has a sense of humor, if the tree weren't centered, it would just be another shot of a tree in a field. I like that you're breaking rules... this image can be interpreted in many ways too...
ditto about the contrast, it needs some extra "Umph." just a little bit though, not to blow anything out in the darks or lights. part of this image's appeal is it's blandness and straightforward composition.
