One of the best sunsets I've seen on Photochimps: good foreground, the bridge in the background, great clouds, and a bird in just the right place. Did you have to composit the bird into the photo, or was your capture perfect?

Definitely works well in a square. The sky really fills it up. Very nice.

Crazy distortion works better here than in many photos, such as urban landscapes or photos with people. Sometimes less is more, or at least enough. When we can't get to a better locale to capture a fleeting phenomena, grabbing just a part of the entire scene is better than nothing. In this instance, using a longer lens to crop in from the middle to just to the right of the first large tree on the left, and stepping a few feet to your right to clean up the foreground, would include clouds down almost to the horizon. Making it portrait format would emphasize clouds rather than the park. The viewer of a photograph rarely knows what existed outside the frame, and doesn't need to know. It's up to the photographer to fill that frame in the best way possible.

If an image is captured only for posting online, your D300 records more detail than necessary. In such a shot, one can keep the back of the camera vertical and zoom out to capture too much foreground. When the image is cropped, the perspective will be correct. This is easier than correcting perspective in an image editor.
